15 Apr Ask for what you want and accept what you get!
Alaafia Fam! Do you ever have trouble asking for what you want? This week’s Orisa Prayer and Meditation message from the odu ofun irete reminds us of the power of the tongue and the importance of simply asking for what we need instead of making things more complicated for ourselves.
The story I told speaks of a time when Orunmila’s regular divination (have you been getting yours?) revealed to him that iku (death) was coming for his son and he was advised to make ebo (ritual offering) to help prevent it. In fact, iku came to the house that very night, but Orunmila had completed the offering and given Esu his portion, so Esu intervened and stopped iku at the door, offering some of the delicious soup that Orunmila had made for Esu as an offering. Iku ate the soup and fell fast asleep, forgetting his duty. When iku woke in the morning, it started to enter the house to complete the deed it came to do and it heard Orunmila rubbing his ikin and praying, saying “Please Iku, do not take my child, I am begging you. I respect you, I know you have to do what you have to do, just please go to another place today.”
Iku realized that Orunmila could have used charms, medicines, or other magic to push it away but, instead, he chose to simply ask and beseech iku not to take his son. Iku was so moved by this display of respect that it decided to spare Orunmila’s son… for the time being.
Always plenty lessons in the stories of Ifa, the main one being that our fervent prayer is the most powerful medicine we possess! Sometimes we think we’ve gotta jump up and down and do all kinds of rituals and magical works when a simple prayer would do the trick. Many times we cause ourselves more complication by trying to ‘figure out” how to get something when all we have to do is ask for it and have faith that our requests are being heard. Step up your confidence and know that spirit is listening when you speak, so say what you need with your chest! This goes for interactions with both other humans and with spirit.
Our power statement for the week: I will ask for what I need!
In alignment with this message (as always!) Tethered, our card of the week from the Chalks of Kikongo Oracle Deck, emphasizes the fact that we are indeed connected to the spiritual realm. While we’re busy asking for what we need, we have to remember to give thanks, praise, and offering to all of the divinities that walk with us. As well, it asks us to use caution before attaching ourselves to people and things that may not actually be as aligned with us as we may think they are.
Our crystal ally for the week Seriphos Green Quartz, helps us to accept those moments when things don’t quite go our way and we don’t get what we want. Asking doesn’t mean we’re gonna get what we want 100% of the time and, in those moments when we don’t, green quartz helps to soothe our hearts so that we can accept reality as it is and see the blessing in even those things that may initially look and feel like setbacks. Remember that sometimes rejection is divine protection.
May these messages and lessons resonate with you whenever you connect with them! Ase!
