Finding Your Confidence-Humility Balance

Alaafia blessed Family!

This week’s Orisa Prayer and Meditation was a throwback lesson from 2022 bringing a great reminder from Sango about the importance of balancing humility with confidence. As we pursue greatness, we need both the confidence to forge ahead boldly as well as the humility to know when we need to ask for help or when we’re simply doing a lil too much.

Sango exemplifies this as, in spite of being a king and having so much strength and so many resources at his disposal, deep down, he suffered from some lack of confidence that led him to act out in destructive ways. In one of his most famous–and deeply tragic–stories, he accidentally burned down his palace and everyone in it because he wanted to show off his power. No one had even questioned or challenged him! But his own lack of confidence and lack of humility was his undoing in that instance.

During our Monday Motivation I spoke about how we as people of African descent have had our confidence undermined for a long time, especially those of us who are women. We have been taught that we are here to serve and benefit others–often at our own expense–and to accept the bare minimum in return. We’ve been taught we should be grateful for whatever we get and not ask for more.

Our ancestral traditions say, “bump that!” We’re here to  live in bliss, have all the blessings, and fulfill as much of our destiny as we are able. We can only do that if we have the confidence to boldly take the necessary steps toward our achievements and happiness.

Sodalite, our crystal ally for the week, encourages us to get out of our own way and speak up for what we want and need. It helps to clear our throat centers and be direct with our intentions. The first step to accomplishing a goal is knowing what it is that you want and believing that that you can and should have it. Go out there and get all that you deserve and desire!
